Learn the Facts About Skin Cancer

In the United States, one in five people will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. Luckily, when caught early, most skin cancers are highly curable. That is why it is important to know the risk factors, prevention methods, and signs of skin cancer so that you can keep your skin healthy for years to come.
Everyone is at risk of skin cancer, regardless of skin tone, gender, or age. There are many factors that may lead to an increased risk of developing skin cancer, including personal or family history of the disease, a history of sunburns, UV tanning bed usage, excessive sun exposure, a weakened immune system, and more.
“Around 90% of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to sun,” shares dermatologist Dr. Stephanie Lai of Dermatology Specialists of AL in Auburn. “While you do not have control over genetic risk factors, you are able to lower your risk of skin cancer by practicing sun safety every day.”
The best way to prevent skin cancer is to avoid exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation that causes DNA damage to the skin. Make sure to wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily throughout the year, reapplying every two hours or more frequently if sweating or swimming. When you are spending time outside, wear protective clothing as well as a hat and sunglasses. You should also consider avoiding sun exposure when possible during the hours of 10AM to 2PM when the sun’s UV rays are the strongest.
In addition to the simple daily prevention steps above, it is important to schedule an appointment with a dermatology specialist at least once per year, or more frequently if you have one or more risk factors increasing your chances of developing skin cancer. In between dermatology appointments, it is recommended that you perform regular at- home skin checks. Look for spots on the skin that are new, changing, or unusual. If any spots of concern are found, contact your dermatology specialist right away.
“Unlike other cancers, skin cancer can be seen on the surface of your skin,” said Dr. Lai. “A skin cancer screening from a dermatologist is a visual exam that is painless, only takes a few minutes, and could save your life.”
